West side – and the marks of a movie

Posted by on May 28. 2015 in new york | 0 comments

[codepeople-post-map]When I left the house this morning, it was about 24 Celsius, that’s OK. But, when you get down to a subway station, it might increase to 40, so I was happy to be distracted by a little Concert.
I went to West 72nd Street. From there, you can pretty much walk the Movie “You’ve got Mail”. The Starbuck, the Café Lalo, where Joe Fox couldn’t tell the truth, and the Gray’s Papaya, where the Hot Dogs are really great, and of course the Papaya Juice.
On two of the photos, you see a little book store, where something weird happened. While I was looking through the book offer, a young Woman came, sat down on the ground, and began to pull one book after another out of the shelf. I have to admit: I considered her mentally ill… After a while, I asked her, if she was going to buy all these books. And she answered: Of course not, I only want to see the books in second row. Therefore, I have to get the other books out of the shelf and …
Well, I recognized, that she was doing something pretty normal, but the way, she explained it to me, and the time, she took for that, was still weird.

… dary … legendary!

Point of view – New York 1

This is now my first Point of View in New York, after so many in Hamburg. It is in Manhattan, but where?

Astoria and a Place at the River

Posted by on May 27. 2015 in new york | 0 comments

I live in Astoria, at the end of the Subway tracks N and Q, where in 2012 you could’n even find a Starbucks. Ich remember Michela saying, that if Starbucks open here, we know, this is no longer a secret place.

The first part of the day was not my kind of thing. I stayed at the Computer, trying to fix a Problem with sharing posts to facebook …
After NOT solving the problem, I took the Subway to Broadway (yes, still in Queens) to take a walk.
[codepeople-post-map]I bought a Cappuccino and a Scone – the way to the east river through the hot streets was longer than I expected, the Coffee was almost cold. But there, in the Socrates Sculpture Park, I found a place under a tree. From there, you see Roosevelt Island and the Upper East Side.

The Staten Island Ferry

The first part of this day, I spent working on my photos and blogging. Than, I went to Manhattan, on the East River side, where you can walk and sit, like in a german “Kurbad”. You can even walk to the Battery Park, just mind to hold your breath, passing the Helicopters – their smell is awful.
For a guy from Hamburg, everything above 70 Degr. is a real summer, so I had the Idea, to get on the Staten Island Ferry, to cool down, which worked out for me.
The last picture was made in the Subway Station Astoria Ditmars – The Robert F. Kennedy Bridge at Sunset.

New York and the Memorial Day

Posted by on May 25. 2015 in new york | 0 comments

Today, it was the last Monday of May, the real Memorial Day. For a german guy, it doesn’t feel normal, to celebrate this kind of pride.
Michela, the beautiful, I live with, made me to visit this event at the Hudson, and I don’t regret it. It touched me, to see the american people and soldiers talking to each other with so much respect and fun, the children climbing on tanks, taking selfies everywhere:

Ja, es stimmt – Uniform schmückt ungemein. Mehr zu diesem Tag findet Ihr hier: http://www.weltgesehen.de/de/new-york-und-der-memorial-day/

After that, I went back inside the shadows of the skyscraper. Especially on the Times Square, worlds are colliding. The fire driven Hot Dog stand in front of the big M&M store – you wouldn’t see any of this in Germany. It is business everywhere, and at this place, the room for it is so much bigger, that the room for the people, for whom the business is for …
On the way home, I bought some food, and back in Queens, Michela and I cooked together. She’s an italian Chef, so I was nervous, but it worked out for me – she liked the sauce, I made.

Life on Memorial Day

[codepeople-post-map]For the americans, the Memorial Day is a serious thing, and they celebrate it for a long weekend. Allmost every business has special offers this time, and in the whole city, you find something related to this holiday.
For me, it was a relaxing day. I took photos at the Washington square park, my version of the famous picture of the movie “When Harry met Sally” – just like I had planned.
The park and the street were full of people – Artists were showing their work, and the air was filled with the smell of ice-cream and BBQ. It might sound paradox – but BECAUSE of all the people, the scene was very peaceful.

The light and the bridges

Because of this great night, my day today startet at noon. From my to-do-list, I choose: Find the place, where Berenice Abbott took her famous picture of the Manhattan Bridge – (the first one on this site) and make your own version of it. Another thing, I found in this street – a great bookstore for used and old books, which now is struggling – so go there an buy!

From there, I went along the east river to the Brooklyn Bridge, where I made this little Movie.

The first Day in New York

The first challenge of the day was quite simple: Find a Bank of America and get some Money. From 2012, I knew, the was one at the Times Square – so I got there:

Eat this …:

And of course, the place was still there, but only the Bank was not, just a fence of America … So, I thought, somewhere around here, there has to be one, right? I took a walk around the TS. It felt like two hours, until I succeed. Yippie, I had my money, and from then on, everywhere was a bank of America …
The fun continued on my “way” to B+H – I was very good in walking in circles around it, until I found this huge store. An employee took care of me – he answered my first question right away in german – I thought, nobody would notice – damn.

Because of the six hours delay, it is still the 20th of May, here in the Big Apple, 9 PM.
From Berlin to Amsterdam and than to New York, landed at 2 PM, I went to Queens by subway. Now, I am back her in this Appartment of Michela, an my room smells just the same, like three years ago, felt like coming home. A lot of things might have chenged, but A LOT didn’t …

Photos of a trip on the wall

Posted by on May 10. 2015 in new york | 0 comments

This is, where they belong, on the wall, where everybody can see them. Of course not everyone of them. In 2012, I took about 2000 photos in New York. The keepers were 1400. The preselection for the exhibition 119, and now, there are 18 on my wall, 16 in black and white, ten of them in beautiful black oak frames with passepartout. It took me two weeks of working on them, print them and frame them. And yesterday the opening of the exhibition with great american food by Alexander Schattenberg and wonderfull music by Twosome Entwined, Blues Bossa and Jazz – I love them. And finally, I could share my photos, see the excited faces. How didn’t I know, what it would meant to me?
Yes, these photo were shot to hang on a wall – I knew that right from the start. But to know something and actually do it are sometimes as seperated, as the earth is from the moon.
I wanted the titel card to show the location of every photo, so I took the GPS Data and Google Street View and did some “homework”. It was a shok to see, that the kiosk I photographed on the Wall Street, is now replaced with one made of Steel an glas. The things are changing, also at places, you don’t see … I will experience that in about ten days.
Now, here are some photos of the Vernissage. Yummi Catering by Alexander Schattenberg and you see Twosome Entwined performing.
